Civil Process Server - Jail

Incumbent serves as Civil Process Server for the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, responsible for serving the Sheriff, Courts, and people of Morgan County.

DUTIES:

Serves all necessary court documents and directives, including but not limited to subpoenas, summonses, writs of replevin, protective orders, and any other orders issued by the Courts.

Testifies in Court to provided evidence related to assigned duties when required.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

High school diploma/HSE and must be a graduate of Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Must maintain all Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board requirements to retain Tier One Certification, unless otherwise established.

Ability to obtain and maintain possession of all required certifications, including First Responder/CPR, IDACS, and Handgun/Firearm Training.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a written test, physical agility test, and drug test.

Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of the customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the Department, and take authoritative action as situations demand.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to complete required reports within Department deadlines.

Working knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.

Working knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, procedures, and limitations and ability to speak clearly and distinctly, hear and be understood when communicating in person, by radio, or by telephone.

Working knowledge of and ability to properly operate all assigned department equipment and weapons including computer, radio, baton, taser, camera, handgun, handheld self defense spray, and vehicle.

Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, and accepted police procedures.

Ability to appropriately receive, maintain, and account for inmate articles received.

Ability to obey all written and verbal orders and directives from the Sheriff and superior officers.

Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially irate/violent individuals in precarious situations and take authoritative action.

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, other County departments, various police departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to work independently and with others in a team environment, often amidst frequent distractions, interruptions, time constraints, and on several tasks at the same time.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations, plan/coordinate work assignments, and utilize good judgment in extreme and uncommon situations.

Ability to work extended/irregular hours and evenings.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent receives indirect supervision with assignments guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures. Incumbent’s work schedule will primarily be business hours, day shift during the week to better serve the courts and MCSO. However, there shall be work hour flexibility to complete some service requirements when necessary or directed. Work errors are primarily detected or prevented through supervisory review. Undetected errors could result in damage to equipment, endangerment to self/others, and possible loss of life.

III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, various police departments, and the public, for purposes of giving and receiving information and rendering service.

Incumbent reports directly to Chief Deputy.

IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties in a vehicle and is regularly exposed to hazards and violence associated with encountering resistance, subduing an attacking and/or armed individual. Regular duties involve driving for long periods and at high rate of speed, sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, walking up/down flights of stairs, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending/reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, keyboarding, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Incumbent may work in extreme temperatures, in wet/icy surroundings, run for short periods, and crawl/climb over fences and shrubs in serving warrants.

Incumbent works extended/irregular hours and evenings.
