Jail Maintenance
Incumbent serves as Maintenance for the Morgan County Jail, responsible for performing maintenance duties and supervising assigned staff.
DUTIES:
Supervises assigned staff, including making work assignments.
Conducts routine inspections of building and equipment and maintains safety equipment in building. Fixes and repairs items and equipment not in working order.
Evaluates, maintains, and repairs plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment and systems.
Communicates with management when outside assistance is required to repair equipment. Schedules and contacts outside contractors and vendors for repairs. Oversees contractors and vendors when professional repair is needed.
Installs appliances and equipment.
Orders building and cleaning supplies for facility.
Maintains outside grounds, including mowing grass and shoveling snow.
Responds to requests for maintenance. Performs regular maintenance tasks, including changing bulbs, repairing leaks, and fixing locks.
Operates various tools and equipment in the performance of assigned duties, including but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, ball blower, air nozzle and compressor, driver, ratchet, calipers, files, micrometer, mop, broom, gauges, pallet jack, fork lift, manlift, belt sander, pressure washer, grinder, drill press, and welding equipment.
Performs related duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to meet all County hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of the customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the department and take authoritative action as situation demand.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and ability to complete required reports within department deadlines.
Ability to supervise assigned staff, including making work assignments.
Ability to operate various tools and equipment in the performance of assigned duties, including but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, ball blower, air nozzle and compressor, driver, ratchet, calipers, files, micrometer, mop, broom, gauges, pallet jack, fork lift, manlift, belt sander, pressure washer, grinder, drill press, and welding equipment.
Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking/sitting for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending, reaching, close/far vision, color/depth perception, and handling/grasping objects.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, contractors, vendors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often under time constraints, and on several tasks at the same time.
Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and evenings, travel out of town to pick up parts, but not overnight, respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, and serve on 24-hour call.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs maintenance duties in compliance with instructions and established procedures, receiving general supervision and applying knowledge learned on the job. Considerable care and skill are required in the use and maintenance of equipment and locks. Work priorities and schedules are primarily determined by supervisor and a flexible, customary routine. Errors in work are usually detected or prevented through procedural safeguards and reference to appliance operating manuals.
Incumbent reports directly to Jail Commander.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent performs maintenance duties, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking/sitting for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending, reaching, close/far vision, color/depth perception, and handling/grasping objects.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs duties inside a jail, and may be exposed to wet and icy conditions, work in confined areas, high places, and noisy environments, and work near chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, and dirt. Incumbent is required to wear protective clothing and equipment and must observe safety precautions to ensure safety of self and others. Incumbent works with or is exposed to violent/irate inmates, and responds to situations involving potential harm to self/others, such as spills.
Incumbent works extended hours, weekends, and evenings, travels out of town to pick up parts, but not overnight, responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, and serves on 24-hour call.
