Maintenance/Equipment Operator PT

Incumbent serves as Maintenance/Equipment Operator for the Morgan County Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for constructing and maintaining Park buildings and grounds.

DUTIES:

Supervises and directs inmate workers involving making work assignments and providing training.

Inspects, restores, and maintains all assigned areas, such as buildings, walking trails, berms after flooding, and performs preventative maintenance.

Maintains grounds including mowing, weed eating, tree trimming, mulching, and snow removal. Prepares for large events including setting up, tearing down and maintenance during event.

Performs general landscaping including planting, watering plants, taking care of trees, and removing invasive plant species.

Lays and maintains brick sidewalks.

Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs procedures on equipment, such as repair tires, belts, oil changes, belt replacements, and blade/chain sharping.

Performs duties such as building and repairing various types of fencing.

Trains staff involving cleaning standards, safety on equipment, and inspects work of staff. Prepares records of all inspections.

Operates a variety of heavy equipment in performing of duties, including, but not limited to, bulldozers, bobcat, toolcat, backhoe, single axel dump truck, tractors, zero turn mowers, bush hog, pallet jack, fork lift, belt sander, snow blower, and other equipment as needed.

Operates a variety of hand and/or power tools, including but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, ratchet, files, mop, broom, deburring/deflashing, pressure washer, cutting torch, and welding equipment.

Ensures proper care and storage of maintenance equipment and cleaning chemicals.

Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and trash pickup including dumping cans and replacing bags.

Performs related duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

High school diploma or HSE.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all department hiring requirements, including passage of drug test and medical exam.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and basic janitorial and sanitation requirements for assigned areas of responsibility.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OHSA guidelines.

Working knowledge of maintenance practices, building upkeep, with ability to complete renovations/repairs on buildings and equipment.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and ability to prepare detailed reports as required

Working knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with a variety of cleaning chemicals and pesticides, with ability to read and understand equipment manuals and label directions for correct mixing and use of cleaning supplies and/or pesticides.

Ability to supervise and direct inmate workers involving making work assignments and providing training.

Ability to properly operate a variety of heavy equipment in performing of duties, including, but not limited to, bulldozers, bobcat, toolcat, backhoe, single axel dump truck, tractors, zero turn mowers, bush hog, pallet jack, forklift, belt sander, snow blower, and other equipment as needed.

Ability to properly operate a variety of hand and/or power tools, including but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, ratchet, files, mop, broom, deburring/deflashing, pressure washer, cutting torch, and welding equipment.

Ability to physically perform maintenance duties, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, lifting objects weighing over 50 pounds, carrying and pushing/pulling objects, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, driving, keyboarding, climbing ladders, handling/grasping/fingering objects, close/far vision, color/depth perception, and hearing sounds/communications. Incumbent may be exposed to violent/irate individuals, work in confined areas, work new fumes, odors, dust, dirt, work in noisy environment, work in wet/icy surroundings, in extreme temperatures, and walking on uneven terrain.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision, working others in a team environment, working under time pressure, working on several tasks at the same time, and working rapidly for long periods.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, inmates, Jail supervisors, vendors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to read, interpret detailed specifications, plan/layout assigned work projects. Ability to count, compute, and make simple arithmetic additions/subtractions. Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions.

Ability to occasionally work extended hours, work weekends and evenings and respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent receives general supervision with assignments guided by broad policies and/or general objectives. Assignments and objectives are set jointly by supervisor and incumbent. Incumbent follows standard operating procedures or policy and procedural manual. Must have supervisor permission to deviate from standard operating procedures.

Incumbent reports directly to the Assistant Park Director.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent performs a variety of maintenance duties, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, lifting objects weighing over 50 pounds, carrying and pushing/pulling objects, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, driving, keyboarding, climbing ladders, handling/grasping/fingering objects, close/far vision, color/depth perception, and hearing sounds/communications.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs duties in both indoor and outdoor settings, involving exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, dirt, heights normally associated with maintenance duties, e noise, varying weather conditions, extreme temperatures, confined areas, walking on uneven terrain and slippery surfaces. Incumbent must wear protective clothing and equipment.

Incumbent is occasionally required to work extended hours, work weekends and evenings and respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis.
