Evidence Technician
Incumbent serves as Part-time Evidence Technician for the Morgan County Sheriff, responsible for maintaining evidence in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
DUTIES:
Collects, documents, and preserves evidence, transporting and maintaining chain of command of evidence. Reviews crime lab reports, pictures, and other documents to aid in investigations.
Maintains Evidence Property Room, including checking status of stolen property and recovering and taking inventory of stolen property.
Maintains confidentiality and security of information and cases.
Appears in court, including giving testimony and presenting evidence in legal proceedings as needed.
Performs other duties as needed or required.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High school diploma or HSE.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to meet all County hiring requirements, including passage of medical, written, psychological, and drug tests.
Working knowledge of and ability to manage evidence in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OSHA guidelines and safety precautions practices.
Working knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.
Working knowledge of standard office policies and procedures with computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet, and Department-specific software systems, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
Working knowledge of standard filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and organized files and records.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to complete required correspondence and reports within Department deadlines.
Ability to obey all written and verbal orders and directives from the Sheriff and superior officers.
Ability to properly operate standard office equipment and assigned department equipment including computer, printer, telephones, calculator, and radio.
Ability to meet all Department hiring and retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others in the workplace.
Shall comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to deal with sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner, and remain alert, calm and courteous under extreme situations and relay information as needed.
Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, other County departments, local law enforcement agencies, Indiana State Police, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to observe, compile, analyze and evaluate data, take action based on that analysis.
Ability to work independently and with others in a team environment, work rapidly for long periods and on several tasks at the same time, often amidst frequent distractions, interruptions, time constraints.
Ability to compute and perform arithmetic calculations.
Ability to appear in court, present testimony and evidence in legal proceedings.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent’s assignments and objectives are set jointly by supervisor and the incumbent. Incumbent follows standard operating procedures and policy manuals and must have supervisor’s permission to deviate from standard operating procedures. Errors are primarily prevented through procedural safeguards and prior instructions from supervisor. Work errors could result in endangerment to self/others, embarrassment to employer, and/or civil liability.
III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, local law enforcement agencies, Indiana State Police, and the public, for purpose of exchanging information and rendering service. This position is part-time.
Incumbent reports directly to Chief of Investigations.
IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs duties in a police station, in the field, and in a vehicle, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, keyboarding, driving, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Incumbent may work with or near chemicals, noisy environments, extreme temperatures, and wet/icy surroundings. Protective equipment/gear must be worn according to Department policy.
